At present, the production of ferrosilicon uses silica sand, steel scraps and coke particles or blue carbon as raw materials, which are added to the submerged arc furnace to generate ferrosilicon at above 1700 degree . When using this process to produce ferrosilicon, in order to ensure the air permeability of the submerged arc furnace charge surface, the particle size of silica sand, coke particles or blue carbon is required to be relatively large. The silica particle size is generally 40~120mm, and the coke particle size is generally 4~18mm. The contact area between silica and coke particles or blue carbon and steel scraps is small, the reaction speed is slow, and the smelting unit consumption is high.

The use of "waste materials" such as silica sand, silicon micropowder, siliceous coal gangue, blue carbon foam, anthracite, and finely washed bituminous coal in the raw materials is used to smelt ferrosilicon, which expands the scope of raw material use for the ferrosilicon industry and expands the space for the comprehensive utilization of silica sand, siliceous coal gangue, and silicon micropowder. At present, the price of blue carbon foam and coke foam is about one-third of the price of granular ones, while siliceous coal gangue is regarded as waste and piled up around coal mines. If it can be effectively utilized, it can alleviate the pressure of environmental pollution and increase its added value. At the same time, as a raw material for smelting ferrosilicon, it can reduce the production cost of manufacturers.
